Psalm 67 –Part 2
“And cause His face to shine upon us “ (Verse 67:1b)
Dr.Larry Crabb writes,” Until we develop a taste for God, we prefer a better life of blessings from God over a better hope of intimacy with Him”. What happens when blessings don’t come? What happens when the Job we wanted doesn’t pan out, When sickness interrupts our plan, our children don’t act the way we think they should? When our eyes are on our circumstances and not our creator, it is easy to get discouraged. We can lose hope and become bitter. Why? Because we have worshipped the gifts and not the giver, the blessings and not the blesser. We must understand that knowing God is the real blessing. Love the giver rather than the gift.
David says, in verse 1b, “and cause His face to shine upon me” which means, “among us”. To have God’s face shining on us is the opposite of a scowling or angry face. To have His face shining towards us is the opposite of having Him turn His face away from us with indifference or disgust. It means to have His smile or favor upon us.
At the end of the Psalm 67 in verses 6 and 7, the psalmist repeats the Name of God three times in connection with His blessings: “God, our God, bless us, God bless us...” This means God and His blessings can’t be separated. He is the blessing, to Him as our God. You can have everything that the world counts as blessings but if you do not have God, you are not truly blessed. In another psalm, 42, the psalmist fully realized this great truth, when he cried,” my soul thirsts for God, for the living God , when can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:2)
Nothing less than God will satisfy his heart and will be considered as a complete blessing in his life. It is God, only god that he longed for and desired in his life.
What is the greatest blessing you have in your life? God or mundane material blessings of this world? Choose God, the true blessing.
