Context:
Ezra 8: : Ezra registered the people and Levites to go and build the temple and the city of Jerusalem. He got all provisions to do the project. However, he did not take King’s protection as believed that God is his protection. When he started to move, he realized that the thief and pandits on the way to Jerusalem were their threats and he called for fasting and prayer.
Fasting Prayer Means to humble, seek right way and protection from the Lord. Ezra.8:21
- 1 There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.
- Ezra understood the spiritual power of fasting which is the demonstration of single minded devotion to God and His cause. He asked the people to fast and pray so that they may focus on God for direction and protection. He invited the people to repent and humble before God as real fasting is partnered with real repentance and prayer. Matthew 17:21
- Exodus.14:13-14:13 And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation[b] of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold[c] your peace.”
- Psalm.17:7-8:Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand, O You who [c]save those who trust in You From those who rise up against them. 8 Keep me as the [d]apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,
- Bible Example: 1 Samuel 12:22-24:22 For the Lord will not forsake His people, for His great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you His people. 23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way. Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.
- Sermon Illustration:.Ira Sankey, who for years led the music for D.L. Moody’s evangelistic meetings, was traveling by steamboat on Christmas Eve in 1875. He was recognized by some of the passengers, and they asked him to sing. Sankey agreed, and began singing “Saviour Like a Shepherd Lead Us.” When the song was done, one of the listeners stepped forward and asked, “Did you serve in the Union Army? “Yes,” Mr. Sankey answered.“Can you remember if you were doing picket duty on a bright, moonlit night in 1862?”“Yes,” Mr. Sankey said again.“I was serving in the Confederate army. When I saw you standing at your post, I raised my gun and took aim. I was standing in the shadow, completely concealed, while the full light of the moon was falling upon you. At that instant, you raised your eyes to Heaven and began to sing that same song. ‘Let him sing his song to the end,’ I said to myself, ‘I can shoot him afterwards.’ I heard the words perfectly: ‘We are Thine; do Thou befriend us. Be the Guardian of our way.’ I began to think of my childhood and my God-fearing mother who sang that song to me. When you finished, it was impossible for me to take aim again. I thought, ‘The Lord who is able to save that man from certain death must surely be great and mighty.’
Fasting Prayer Means to trust the Lord strongly and expect protection from the Lord and he will protect us. Ezra.8:22-23
- Ezra.8:22-23: 22 For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.23 So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer.”
- Ezra was ashamed to request of the king to protect the people by the soldiers and horsemen as he had expressed great confidence in the hand of God upon him and his journey. He knew that the journey had a lot of dangers such as constant threats of robbers and bandits especially they were transporting so many valuables. However, he believed that God would grant his protection over him and people than the king’s army.
- 1 Peter 5:6-7:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
- Psalm.34:6-8: This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,And saved him out of all his troubles. The [a]angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
- Bible Example: Ahaz’s initial sin of turning to Assyria for help against Syria and Israel (2 Kings 16:1–9): Jeremiah’s prophecy against the country.
- Jeremiah.14:12: 12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them.
- 12. அவர்கள் உபவாசித்தாலும், நான் அவர்கள் விண்ணப்பத்தைக் கேட்பதில்லை; அவர்கள் தகனபலிகளையும் காணிக்கைகளையும் செலுத்தினாலும், நான் அவர்கள்மேல் பிரியமாயிருப்பதில்லை;
- Sermon Illustration:The mighty Niagara River drops 180 feet at the American and Horseshoe Falls. Above the falls there are violent rapids. Before reaching the rapids, where boats are still able to navigate, there is a bridge for pedestrians. There is a sign mounted to this bridge that says: “Do you have an anchor? Do you know how to use it?”
