Journey to the Cross: Lent Sermon Series

The Temptation of Lord Jesus Christ

Matthew 4:1-11

Rev Dr Devadosan Sugirtharaj

Introduction

  • The journey to the cross for Jesus began with the baptism at the Jordan river by the John the Baptist and it moved to the next station of Jesuss journey, the Wilderness for temptation and also forty days of fasting prayer.
  • The temptation of Jesus is similar in essence but different from us as He is the Son of God. He was tempted to prove His divinity but we are tempted to prove whether we are faithful to Jesus or not.

Word study

  • The Greek root-word Peirasmos means an experiment, trial, temptation, test.
  • The Hebrew word Nasah is always used for test, not temptation.
  • Biblically, God tests the people to progress their lives especially in terms of obedience and the Devil tests the people to destroy,

Context of the text

  • After the baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit in the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Jesus did not need to be tempted to help him to grow but he endured it so that he can help us in our temptations. Hebrews.2:18; 4:15. He fasted forty days and forty nights as Moses did on the mountain to bring Gods law to the people of Israel.

1. When we are tempted to an appeal to the lust of the flesh, let us not yield the temptation by the word of God Matthew.4:3-4

  • 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”4 But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
  • The tempter came to Jesus to tempt him after forty days of fasting, he asked Jesus to change the stones to become bread. Satan did not question his deity but challenged him to prove through his miraculous work. The temptation was focused on using Gods gifts for selfish purposes and fulfilling personal satisfaction. Jesus disagreed with him by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 that every Gods word should be more precious than the food itself.
  • When Satan tempts us to indulge in the lust of the flesh, we, the children of God, should not yield ourselves to this temptation. When we rely on the power of Gods word, we fight against the temptation, not by our strength, but by the word of God.
  • Psalm.119:11. Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
  • Galatians.5:16-17: 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
  • Biblical Example: Joseph: Genesis.39:8-9:8 But he refused and said to his masters wife, Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
  • Sermon Illustration: Some historians have argued that lead poisoning may have contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire. One expert focused his work on the way that Aristocratic Romans would boil honey in lead pots to make a sweetener called defrutum and then they'd boil it down even further to something even sweeter called sapa. The Romans found that if they boil them in copper, it gave a bitter kind of taste but the lead gave a sweet kind of taste and they liked it. They would wait until it would all get dried and they would scrape it off and they'd sweeten things with it, this combination of lead and honey. So these sweeteners were used in many ways with meats and wines and many other foods that they ate every day. But the problem was the high temperatures that caused the lead and the honey to mix, made a poison called Lead Acetate. And this poison would accumulate slowly in their bodies and destroy them, weakening them gradually and eventually killing them.

2. When we are tempted to appeal to the pride of life, let us not yield the temptation by the word of God. Matthew.4:5-7

  • 5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: He shall give His angels charge over you, and, In their hands, they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus said to him, It is written again, You shall not [a]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
  • Satan tempted Jesus to appeal to the desire of approval from God and the public by demonstrating an extraordinary and supernatural event. He put him on the pinnacle of the temple which was 200 feet from the floor of the Kidron Valley. The Devil tried to create a crisis artificially so that he might tempt Jesus to test Gods faithfulness and His word by quoting Psalm. 91:11-12. Jesus rejected the temptation by quoting Deuteronomy.6:16.
  • When we are tempted by the devil to appeal to the pride of life, he tempts us to prove whether God and the public accept or recognize us as Gods children by testing Gods faithfulness and his word. We should resist him by Gods word that we can live only in a relationship of trust with God and it needs no test.
  • Proverbs 8:13:The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.
  • Isaiah.5:15:People shall be brought down, Each man shall be humbled, And the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled.
  • Biblical Example: The Pharisee. Luke.18:9-14: 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’
  • Sermon Illustration: The story is told of two women in Shanghai who were discussing the topic of pride and began to wonder if Hudson Taylor was ever tempted to be prideful because of his many accomplishments. One of the women decided to ask Taylors wife, Maria, about it. Maria promised the woman that she would find out. When Mrs. Taylor asked her husband if he was ever tempted to be proud, he was surprised. Proud about what?” he asked. About all of the things you have done,” his wife explained. Taylor responded, I never knew I had done anything.”

3.When we are tempted to an appeal to the lust of eyes, let us not yield the temptation by the word of God. Matthew.4:8-11

  • 8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”10 Then Jesus said to him, [b]Away with you, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
  • Satan tempted Jesus to appeal to the desire for approval from God and the public by demonstrating an extraordinary and supernatural event.
  • Matthew 6:22-23:The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
  • 1 John.2:15-17: 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
  • Biblical Example: Lot. Genesis.13:10-13: 0 And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar. 11 Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other. 12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom. 13 But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord.
  • Sermon Illustration: There is a story of how an Eskimo kills a wolf. The account is grisly, yet it offers fresh insight into the consuming, self-destructive nature of sin. First, the Eskimo coats his knife blade with animal blood and allows it to freeze. Then he adds another layer of blood, and another until the blade is completely concealed by frozen blood. Next, the hunter fixes his knife in the ground with the blade up. When a wolf follows his sensitive nose to the source of the scent and discovers the bait, he licks it, tasting the fresh frozen blood. He begins to lick faster, more and more vigorously, lapping the blade until the keen edge is bare. Feverishly now, harder and harder the wolf licks the blade in the arctic night. So great becomes his craving for blood that the wolf does not notice the razor-sharp sting of the naked blade on his tongue, nor does he recognize the instant at which his insatiable thirst is being satisfied by his warm blood. His carnivorous appetite just craves more--until the dawn finds him dead in the snow!

Conclusion

The temptation of Jesus plays a significant role in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ and also temptation also plays significant role in our lives.

  1. When we are tempted to an appeal to the lust of the flesh, let us not yield the temptation by the word of God Matthew.4:3-4
  2. When we are tempted to an appeal to the pride of life, let us not yield the temptation by the word of God. Matthew.4:5-7
  3. When we are tempted to an appeal to the lust of eyes, let us not yield the temptation by the word of God. Matthew.4:8-11

Questions for Discussion

  • How is temptation a struggle for us all? Have you had specific times during which temptation was more of a problem? Without necessarily sharing the details, why was this the case and how did you respond to it?
  • Have you ever identify yourself as being tempted in the same way over and over again? What's the reason to happen in your lives?
  • Spiritual baptism and spiritual battle are connected. Can you give some examples of your spiritual battles in your faith journey and what do you learn from the temptations of Jesus to tackle them?
  • There are three key ways in which the devil tempted Jesus as well as us. What is the heart of these temptations? How do you see the same type of temptations manifesting in your lives? How do you confront them with the word of God?
