Dealing with Anxiety

Luke 24:44-53

Introduction

We continue to explore God’s message on encountering risen Christ in this Easter season. Today we meditate on how Christ dealt with our anxieties from Luke.24:44-53.

Word Study

• The Hebrew word for Anxiety is Deagaa.
• The Green word for Anxiety is Merimna.
• The common translations are thought, worry, or care.
• In the Bible, anxiety is uneasy feeling of uncertainty, agitation, dread, or fear.

Risen Christ deals with anxieties with the power of His scriptures, God’s word. Luke.24:44-45

• 44 Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” 45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
• 44. அவர்களை நோக்கி: மோசேயின் நியாயப்பிரமாணத்திலும் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளின் ஆகமங்களிலும் சங்கீதங்களிலும் என்னைக்குறித்து எழுதியிருக்கிறவைகளெல்லாம் நிறைவேறவேண்டியதென்று, நான் உங்களோடிருந்தபோது உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டுவந்த விசேஷங்கள் இவைகளே என்றார்.45. அப்பொழுது வேதவாக்கியங்களை அறிந்துகொள்ளும்படி அவர்களுடைய மனதை அவர் திறந்து அவர்களை நோக்கி:
• When the hearts of disciples were anxious about the future, Jesus spoke and explained the word of God from Law of Moses, Prophets and Psalms and opened their understanding so that they might comprehend the Scriptures. The word of God is primary source for establishing them in confidence against all anxieties.
• When we face a lot of anxieties of our lives about future, Jesus asks us to go back to God’s word and get rid of them. He emphasizes three important anxieties mentioned in Matthew 6:25-34. Our welfare, dignity and security by eating/drinking, clothing and tomorrow. We need to trust God’s word to live an anxiety-free life.
• Job.23:12:I have not departed from the commandment of His lips;I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my [a]necessary food.
• 12. அவர் உதடுகளின் கற்பனைகளை விட்டு நான் பின்வாங்குவதில்லை; அவருடைய வாயின் வார்த்தைகளை எனக்கு வேண்டிய ஆகாரத்தைப் பார்க்கிலும் அதிகமாய்க் காத்துக்கொண்டேன்.
• Psalm.119:130:The entrance of Your words gives light;It gives understanding to the simple.
• 130. உம்முடைய வசனத்தின் பிரசித்தம் வெளிச்சம் தந்து, பேதைகளை உணர்வுள்ளவர்களாக்கும்.
• Bible Example: John.8:31-32: 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
• 31. இயேசு தம்மை விசுவாசித்த யூதர்களை நோக்கி: நீங்கள் என் உபதேசத்தில் நிலைத்திருந்தால் மெய்யாகவே என் சீஷராயிருப்பீர்கள்;32. சத்தியத்தையும் அறிவீர்கள், சத்தியம் உங்களை விடுதலையாக்கும் என்றார்.
• Sermon Illustration: Soren Kierkegaard was asked about the need of reading the Bible. He said: When you read God's Word, you must constantly be saying to yourself, "It is talking to me, and about me. The Bible is a letter from God with our personal address on it.  To read the Bible as God’s word one must read it with His heart in His mouth, on tip-toe, with eager expectancy, in conversation with God. To read the Bible thoughtlessly or carelessly or academically or professionally is not to read the Bible as God’s Word. As one reads it as a love letter is read, then one reads it as the Word of God. 

Risen Christ deals with anxieties with the power of being witnesses, God’s purpose. Luke.24:46-49

• 46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, [l]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city [m]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
• 47. அன்றியும் மனந்திரும்புதலும் பாவமன்னிப்பும் எருசலேம் தொடங்கிச் சகல தேசத்தாருக்கும் அவருடைய நாமத்தினாலே பிரசங்கிக்கப்படவும் வேண்டியது 48. நீங்கள் இவைகளுக்குச் சாட்சிகளாயிருக்கிறீர்கள்.49. என் பிதா வாக்குத்தத்தம்பண்ணினதை, இதோ, நான் உங்களுக்கு அனுப்புகிறேன். நீங்களோ உன்னதத்திலிருந்து வரும் பெலனால் தரிப்பிக்கப்படும்வரைக்கும் எருசலேம் நகரத்தில் இருங்கள் என்றார்.
• When the disciples were anxious about his departure, he told that they should focus on the call of God, the real purpose of their existence, to be his witnesses in the world. He also emphasized that they would be his disciples unless they were empowered by His Spirit.
• When we are anxious about life and its demands, we will be diverted the purpose of God and become wandering here and there. When we focus on the purpose of God in our existence, we will overcome the power of the anxieties.
• Isaiah.43:10:“You are My witnesses,” says the Lord,“And My servant whom I have chosen,That you may know and believe Me,And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me.
• 10. நானே அவரென்று நீங்கள் உணர்ந்து, என்னை அறிந்து விசுவாசிக்கும்படிக்கு, நீங்களும் நான் தெரிந்துகொண்ட என் தாசனும் எனக்குச் சாட்சிகளாயிருக்கிறீர்கள் என்று கர்த்தர் சொல்லுகிறார்; எனக்குமுன் ஏற்பட்ட தேவன் இல்லை; எனக்குப்பின் இருப்பதும் இல்லை.
• Acts.5:32:32 And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
• 32. இந்தச் சங்கதிகளைக்குறித்து நாங்கள் அவருக்குச் சாட்சிகளாயிருக்கிறோம். தேவன் தமக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிகிறவர்களுக்குத் தந்தருளின பரிசுத்தஆவியும் சாட்சி என்றார்கள்
• Bible Example: Matthew 11:2-3:2 When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
• 5 Then Philip went down to [a]the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them.
• 5. அப்பொழுது பிலிப்பென்பவன் சமாரியாவிலுள்ள ஒரு பட்டணத்திற்குப் போய், அங்குள்ளவர்களுக்குக் கிறிஸ்துவைக்குறித்துப் பிரசங்கித்தான்
• Sermon Illustration: William Arnot, a distinguished Scottish pastor in the last century, put the matter this way: “To every true Christian these two things may be said: You have need of Christ and Christ has need of you.” He then adds this thought: “The simple fact that a Christian is on earth and not in heaven, is proof that there is something for him here to do; and if he is not doing it, the neglect shows either that he is not yet a Christian or that he is a Christian who grieves Christ.”

Risen Christ deals with anxieties with the power of His second Coming, God’s promise. Luke.24:50-53

• 50 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple [n]praising and blessing God. [o]Amen.
• 50. பின்பு அவர் பெத்தானியாவரைக்கும் அவர்களை அழைத்துக்கொண்டுபோய், தம்முடைய கைகளை உயர்த்தி, அவர்களை ஆசீர்வதித்தார்.51. அவர்களை ஆசீர்வதிக்கையில், அவர்களை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து, பரலோகத்துக்கு எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார்.52. அவர்கள் அவரைப் பணிந்துகொண்டு, மிகுந்த சந்தோஷத்தோடே எருசலேமுக்குத் திரும்பி வந்து,53. நாடோறும் தேவாலயத்திலே தேவனைப் புகழ்ந்து துதித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். ஆமென்.
• When the time came to ascend, Jesus blessed his disciples and then with the promise that he would come back again. This promise of second coming helped the disciples to throw away all the anxieties and they returned with joy and worshiped God every day.
• When our anxieties overwhelm our lives, God’s promise of his second coming will inspire our hopes and joys so that we may continue to live and worship the Lord continually in this world.
• John.14:1-3:“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many [a]mansions; if it were not so, [b]I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also
• 1. உங்கள் இருதயம் கலங்காதிருப்பதாக; தேவனிடத்தில் விசுவாசமாயிருங்கள், என்னிடத்திலும் விசுவாசமாயிருங்கள்.2. என் பிதாவின் வீட்டில் அநேக வாசஸ்தலங்கள் உண்டு; அப்படியில்லாதிருந்தால், நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லியிருப்பேன்; ஒரு ஸ்தலத்தை உங்களுக்காக ஆயத்தம்பண்ணப்போகிறேன்.3. நான் போய் உங்களுக்காக ஸ்தலத்தை ஆயத்தம்பண்ணினபின்பு, நான் இருக்கிற இடத்திலே நீங்களும் இருக்கும்படி, நான் மறுபடியும் வந்து உங்களை என்னிடத்தில் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளுவேன்.
• Titus.2:11-13:11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
• 1. ஏனெனில் எல்லா மனுஷருக்கும் இரட்சிப்பை அளிக்கத்தக்க தேவகிருபையானது பிரசன்னமாகி,12. நாம் அவபக்தியையும் லௌகிக இச்சைகளையும் வெறுத்து, தெளிந்தபுத்தியும் நீதியும் தேவபக்தியும் உள்ளவர்களாய் இவ்வுலகத்திலே ஜீவனம்பண்ணி,13. நாம் நம்பியிருக்கிற ஆனந்த பாக்கியத்துக்கும், மகா தேவனும் நமது இரட்சகருமாகிய இயேசுகிறிஸ்துவினுடைய மகிமையின் பிரசன்னமாகுதலுக்கும் எதிர்பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும்படி நமக்குப் போதிக்கிறது.
• Bible Example: Joshua 23:24:14 “Behold, this day I[a] am going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.
• 14. இதோ, இன்று நான் பூலோகத்தார் எல்லாரும் போகிற வழியே போகிறேன்; உங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் உங்களுக்காகச் சொன்ன நல்வார்த்தைகளிலெல்லாம் ஒரு வார்த்தையும் தவறிப்போகவில்லை என்பதை உங்கள் முழு இருதயத்தாலும் உங்கள் முழு ஆத்துமாவாலும் அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்கள்; அவைகளெல்லாம் உங்களுக்கு நிறைவேறிற்று; அவைகளில் ஒரு வார்த்தையும் தவறிப்போகவில்லை.
• Sermon Illustration: There are approximately 8,810 promises in the entire Bible. In the Old Testament there are 7,706 and in the New Testament there are 1,104 wonderful promises. Deuteronomy 28 has 133 promises, which is more than any other chapter in the Bible.William Carey said, “The future is as bright as the promises of God.”

Conclusion

In this Easter Season, the Risen Lord encounters our anxieties. From this passage, we learn that 

            - Risen Christ deals with anxieties with the power of His scriptures, God’s word. Luke.24:44-45

            - Risen Christ deals with anxieties with the power of being witnesses, God’s purpose. Luke.24:46-49

            - Risen Christ deals with anxieties with the power of His second Coming, God’s promise. Luke.24:50-53

Reflective Questions

1. What are the anxieties you have in your life? How do they affect your life and health? What are the ways have you tried to get rid of them?
2. When you are anxious, how does the word of God enable you to overcome them?
3. When you are anxious, how does the purpose of God enable you to be witnesses of Jesus and eliminate your anxieties?
4. When you are anxious, how does the second coming of Christ bring you hope and help you overcome anxieties?
