• What makes you feel if someone asks you to teach a group of people?

• Definition: A spiritual gift is a significant ability given to each believer by the Holy Spirit, who in this way equips and moves members of the church to serve others in special ways for Christ and his kingdom.
• Different between spiritual gifts and talents:A talent is often mistaken for a Spiritual gift. These abilities are independent of our accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Talent is “any natural ability or power; natural endowment.
• Facts about spiritual gifts: They are freely and graciously given. So there is no place for pride. They are given to serve, not to be served, in the body of Christ.
• Purposes of spiritual gifts:  To build up the body of Christ, the Church; To serve others; To glorify the Lord.

Definition of the gift of teaching.

The gift of teaching is the ability to communicate the information in such a way that the members of the body of Christ understand how to apply the word of God to their own lives and ministries so that they may be built up, unify and mature in the body of Christ to be Christ’s witnesses in word and deed in this world.

• Ephesians.4:11-16:11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the [a]edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
• 11. மேலும் நாம் அனைவரும் தேவனுடைய குமாரனைப்பற்றும் விசுவாசத்திலும் அறிவிலும் ஒருமைப்பட்டவர்களாகி, கிறிஸ்துவினுடைய நிறைவான வளர்ச்சியின் அளவுக்குத்தக்க பூரண புருஷராகும்வரைக்கும்,12. பரிசுத்தவான்கள் சீர்பொருந்தும்பொருட்டு, சுவிசேஷ ஊழியத்தின் வேலைக்காகவும், கிறிஸ்துவின் சரீரமாகிய சபையானது பக்திவிருத்தி அடைவதற்காகவும்,13. அவர், சிலரை அப்போஸ்தலராகவும், சிலரைத் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளாகவும், சிலரைச் சுவிசேஷகராகவும், சிலரை மேய்ப்பராகவும், போதகராகவும் ஏற்படுத்தினார்.14. நாம் இனிக் குழந்தைகளாயிராமல், மனுஷருடைய சூதும் வஞ்சிக்கிறதற்கேதுவான தந்திரமுமுள்ள போதகமாகிய பலவித காற்றினாலே அலைகளைப்போல அடிபட்டு அலைகிறவர்களாயிராமல்,15. அன்புடன் சத்தியத்தைக் கைக்கொண்டு, தலையாகிய கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள் எல்லாவற்றிலேயும், நாம் வளருகிறவர்களாயிருக்கும்படியாக அப்படிச் செய்தார்.16. அவராலே சரீரம் முழுதும், அதற்கு உதவியாயிருக்கிற சகல கணுக்களினாலும் இசைவாய்க் கூட்டி இணைக்கப்பட்டு, ஒவ்வொரு அவயவமும் தன்தன் அளவுக்குத்தக்கதாய்க் கிரியைசெய்கிறபடியே, அது அன்பினாலே தனக்கு பக்திவிருத்தி உண்டாக்குகிறதற்கேதுவாகச் சரீரவளர்ச்சியை உண்டாக்குகிறது.

Discerning the gift.

Those who have this gift are good students of the word of God and seek the truth passionately. Luke.1:1-4

•  Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which [a]have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having [b]had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.Those who have this gift are recognized by others.
• 1. மகா கனம்பொருந்திய தேயோப்பிலுவே, நாங்கள் முழுநிச்சயமாய் நம்புகிற சங்கதிகளை,2. ஆரம்பமுதல் கண்ணாரக்கண்டு வசனத்தைப் போதித்தவர்கள் எங்களுக்கு ஒப்புவித்தபடியே அவைகளைக் குறித்துச் சரித்திரம் எழுத அநேகம்பேர் ஏற்பட்டபடியினால்,3. ஆதிமுதல் எல்லாவற்றையும் திட்டமாய் விசாரித்தறிந்த நானும் உமக்கு உபதேசிக்கப்பட்ட விசேஷங்களின் நிச்சயத்தை நீர் அறியவேண்டுமென்று,4. அவைகளை ஒழுங்காய் உமக்கு எழுதுவது எனக்கு நலமாய்த் தோன்றிற்று.

Those who have this gift communicate the word of God in a clear and relevant way systematically, structurally and specifically. 2 Timothy 2:14

• 14 Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to [a]strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.
• 14. இவைகளை அவர்களுக்கு நினைப்பூட்டி, ஒன்றுக்கும் பிரயோஜனமில்லாமல், கேட்கிறவர்களைக் கவிழ்த்துப்போடுகிறதற்கேதுவான வாக்குவாதம் செய்யாதபடிக்கு, கர்த்தருக்கு முன்பாக அவர்களுக்கு எச்சரித்துப் புத்திசொல்லு.

Those who have this gift defends the truth of God with grace and love.2 Timothy 4:3-5

• 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
• 3. ஏனென்றால், அவர்கள் ஆரோக்கியமான உபதேசத்தைப் பொறுக்கமனதில்லாமல், செவித்தினவுள்ளவர்களாகி, தங்கள் சுய இச்சைகளுக்கேற்ற போதகர்களைத் தங்களுக்குத் திரளாகச் சேர்த்துக்கொண்டு,4. சத்தியத்துக்குச் செவியை விலக்கி, கட்டுக்கதைகளுக்குச் சாய்ந்துபோகுங்காலம் வரும்.5. நீயோ எல்லாவற்றிலும் மனத்தெளிவுள்ளவனாயிரு, தீங்கநுபவி, சுவிசேஷகனுடைய வேலையைச் செய், உன் ஊழியத்தை நிறைவேற்று

Those who have this gift cares for others through their teaching. Colossians.1:28-29

• 28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. 29 To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.
• 28. எந்த மனுஷனையும் கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவுக்குள் தேறினவனாக நிறுத்தும்படிக்கு, அவரையே நாங்கள் அறிவித்து, எந்த மனுஷனுக்கும் புத்திசொல்லி, எந்த மனுஷனுக்கும் எல்லா ஞானத்தோடும் உபதேசம்பண்ணுகிறோம்.29. அதற்காக நான் எனக்குள்ளே வல்லமையாய்க் கிரியை நடப்பிக்கிற அவருடைய பலத்தின்படி போராடிப் பிரயாசப்படுகிறேன்.

Those who have this gift acquires knowledge of the word of God through others under the supervision of the Holy Spirit. Acts.1:1-3

• The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 until the day in which [a]He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many [b]infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
• 1. தெயோப்பிலுவே, இயேசுவானவர் தாம் தெரிந்துகொண்ட அப்போஸ்தலருக்குப் பரிசுத்தஆவியினாலே கட்டளையிட்ட பின்பு,2. அவர் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட நாள்வரைக்கும் செய்யவும் உபதேசிக்கவும் தொடங்கின எல்லாவற்றையுங்குறித்து, முதலாம் பிரபந்தத்தை உண்டுபண்ணினேன்.3. அவர் பாடுபட்டபின்பு, நாற்பது நாளளவும் அப்போஸ்தலருக்குத் தரிசனமாகி, தேவனுடைய ராஜ்யத்துக்குரியவைகளை அவர்களுடனே பேசி, அநேகம் தெளிவான திருஷ்டாந்தங்களினாலே அவர்களுக்குத் தம்மை உயிரோடிருக்கிறவராகக் காண்பித்தார்.

Those who have this gift teaches through the examples. Titus.2:3-5

• 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
• 3. முதிர்வயதுள்ள ஸ்திரீகளும் அப்படியே பரிசுத்தத்துக்கேற்றவிதமாய் நடக்கிறவர்களும், அவதூறுபண்ணாதவர்களும், மதுபானத்துக்கு அடிமைப்படாதவர்களுமாயிருக்கவும்,4. தேவவசனம் தூஷிக்கப்படாதபடிக்கு பாலிய ஸ்திரீகள் தங்கள் புருஷரிடத்திலும், தங்கள் பிள்ளைகளிடத்திலும் அன்புள்ளவர்களும்,5. தெளிந்த புத்தியுள்ளவர்களும், கற்புள்ளவர்களும், வீட்டில் தரித்திருக்கிறவர்களும், நல்லவர்களும், தங்கள் புருஷருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிகிறவர்களுமாயிருக்கும்படி, அவர்களுக்குப் படிப்பிக்கத்தக்க நற்காரியங்களைப் போதிக்கிறவர்களுமாயிருக்கவும் முதிர்வயதுள்ள ஸ்திரீகளுக்குப் புத்திசொல்லு.

Dangers of misusing the gift of teaching

Proud of Knowledge. 1 Corinthians.8:11

• 11 And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
• 11. பலவீனமுள்ள சகோதரன் உன் அறிவினிமித்தம் கெட்டுப்போகலாமா? அவனுக்காகக் கிறிஸ்து மரித்தாரே.

Criticizing practical applications. 2 Timothy 3:16

• 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for [a]instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
• 16. வேதவாக்கியங்களெல்லாம் தேவ ஆவியினால் அருளப்பட்டிருக்கிறது; தேவனுடைய மனுஷன் தேறினவனாகவும், எந்த நற்கிரியையுஞ் செய்யத் தகுதியுள்ளவனாகவும் இருக்கும்படியாக,17. அவைகள் உபதேசத்துக்கும், கடிந்துகொள்ளுதலுக்கும் சீர்திருத்தலுக்கும், நீதியைப் படிப்பிக்குதலுக்கும் பிரயோஜனமுள்ளவைகளாயிருக்கிறது.

Seeking Self-glory. Colossians.3:17

• 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
• 17. வார்த்தையினாலாவது கிரியையினாலாவது, நீங்கள் எதைச் செய்தாலும், அதையெல்லாம் கர்த்தராகிய இயேசுவின் நாமத்தினாலே செய்து, அவர் முன்னிலையாகப் பிதாவாகிய தேவனை ஸ்தோத்திரியுங்கள்.

Examples of Those who had the gift of teaching in the New Testament

Apollos: Acts.18:24-26a

• 24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; 28 for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
• 24. அப்பொழுது அலெக்சந்திரியா பட்டணத்தில் பிறந்தவனும் சாதுரியவானும் வேதாகமங்களில் வல்லவனுமான அப்பொல்லோ என்னும் பேர்கொண்ட ஒரு யூதன் எபேசு பட்டணத்துக்கு வந்தான்.25. அவன் கர்த்தருடைய மார்க்கத்திலே உபதேசிக்கப்பட்டு, யோவான் கொடுத்த ஸ்நானத்தைமாத்திரம் அறிந்தவனாயிருந்து, ஆவியில் அனலுள்ளவனாய்க் கர்த்தருக்கு அடுத்தவைகளைத் திட்டமாய்ப் போதகம்பண்ணிக்கொண்டுவந்தான்.26. அவன் ஜெபஆலயத்தில் தைரியமாய்ப் பேசத்தொடங்கினபோது,

Acquila and Priscilla. Acts.18:26b-28

• When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; 28 for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
• ஆக்கில்லாவும் பிரிஸ்கில்லாளும் அவன் பேசுகிறதைக் கேட்டு, அவனைச் சேர்த்துக்கொண்டு, தேவனுடைய மார்க்கத்தை அதிக திட்டமாய் அவனுக்கு விவரித்துக்காண்பித்தார்கள்.27. பின்பு அவன் அகாயா நாட்டிற்குப் போகவேண்டுமென்றிருக்கையில், சீஷர்கள் அவனை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும்படி சகோதரர் அவர்களுக்கு எழுதினார்கள்.28. அவன் அங்கே வந்தபின்பு வெளியரங்கமாக யூதர்களுடனே பலமாய்த் தர்க்கம்பண்ணி, இயேசுவே கிறிஸ்து என்று வேதவாக்கியங்களைக்கொண்டு திருஷ்டாந்தப்படுத்தினபடியால், கிருபையினாலே விசுவாசிகளானவர்களுக்கு மிகவும் உதவியாயிருந்தான்.

Timothy. 1 Corinthians.4:17

• 17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.
• 17. இதினிமித்தமாக, எனக்குப் பிரியமும், கர்த்தருக்குள் உண்மையுமுள்ள என் குமாரனாகிய தீமோத்தேயுவை உங்களிடத்தில் அனுப்பினேன்; நான் எங்கும் எந்தச் சபையிலும் போதித்துவருகிறபிரகாரம் கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள்ளான என் நடக்கைகளை அவன் உங்களுக்கு ஞாபகப்படுத்துவான்.

Reflection

1. Do you have this gift? Why or why not? Can you think of a time when a member of the body of Christ served as a teacher to you in the way the reading described? What specifically did that person do? What impact did it have on you?
2. Which are points standing out to you the most important in today’s learning? Why? What do you find to be the greatest challenge?
3. If you think that you have this gift, what can you do to strengthen this gift? If you think that you have neglected it, what could be done to stir up or rekindle it in you?
