IS BAPTISM ONE OR MANY?
Introduction
- Four questions:
- Is the adult believer’s baptism only baptism in the Christian faith?
- Is infant baptism biblical and do we need to take adult baptism again? What is
the difference between Christening and Infant baptism?
- What does the reaffirmation of baptism and is it a second baptism?
- Which is the right mode of baptism: Sprinkling or pouring or immersing?
Adult Baptism
Argument: There is only one baptism and it should be adult baptism.
Before baptism
❖ One must hear and understand the gospel.
❖ Mark.16:15-16:15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the
gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved;
but he who does not believe will be condemned.
❖ 15. பின்பு, அவர் அவர்கைள நோ க்கி: நீங்கள் உலகெமங்கும் போய், சர்வ சிருஷ்டிக்கும் சுவிேசஷத்தைப் பிரசங்கியுங்கள்.16.
விசுவாசமுள்ளவனாகி ஞானஸ்நானம் ெபற்றவன் இரட்சிக்கப்படுவான்;
விசுவாசியாதவனோ ஆக்கிைனக்குள்ளா கத்தீர்க்க ப்படுவான்.
❖ One must believe the gospel.
❖ Galatians 3:26-27:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
❖ 26. நீங்கெளல்லாரும் கிறிஸ்து இேயசுைவப்பற்றும் விசுவாசத்தினால்
ேதவனுைடய புத்திரராயிருக்கிறீர்கேள.27.
ஏெனனில், உங்களில் கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள்ளா க
ஞானஸ்நானம் ெபற்றவர்கள் எத்தைனேபரோ, அத்தைனேபரும்
கிறிஸ்துைவத் தரித்துக்கொண்டீர்கேள.
❖ One must repent of sins.
❖ Acts 2:38:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [a]remission of sins; and you shall
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
❖ 38. ேபதுரு அவர்கைள நோ க்கி: நீங்கள் மனந்திரும்பி, ஒவ்வொருவரும் பாவமன்னிப்புக்கென்று இேயசுகிறிஸ்துவின்
நாமத்தினாேல ஞானஸ்நானம் ெபற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள், அப்பொழுது
பரிசுத்தஆவியின் வரத்தைப் ெபறுவீர்கள்.
❖ One must confess Christ.
❖ Romans 10:9,10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
❖ 9. என்னெவன்றா ல், கர்த்த ராகிய இேயசுைவ நீ உன் வாயினாேல அறிக்கை யிட்டு, ேதவன் அவைர மரித்தோரிலிருந்து எழுப்பினாெரன்று உன் இருதயத்திேல விசுவாசித்தால் இரட்சிக்கப்படுவாய்.10.
நீதியுண்டாக இருதயத்திேல விசுவாசிக்கப்படும், இரட்சிப்புண்டாக
வாயினாேல அறிக்கை பண்ணப்படும்.
After Baptism
❖ Each individual is responsible to serve God with proper motives.
❖ Romans.6:17-18:17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet
you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were [a]delivered.
18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
❖ 16. மரணத்துக்கே துவான பாவத்துக்கானாலும், நீதிக்கே துவான
கீழ்ப்ப டிதலுக்கானாலும், எதற்குக் கீழ்ப்ப டியும்படி உங்கைள அடிைமகளாக ஒப்புக்கொடுக்கிறீர்களோ, அதற்கே கீழ்ப்ப டிகிற
அடிைமகளாயிருக்கிறீர்கெளன்று அறியீர்களா?17. முன்னே நீங்கள்
பாவத்திற்கு அடிைமகளாயிருந்தும், இப்பொழுது உங்களுக்கு ஒப்புவிக்கப்பட்ட உபேதச சட்டத்திற்கு நீங்கள் மனப்பூர்வமாய்க் கீழ்ப்ப டிந்ததினாேல ேதவனுக்கு ஸ்தோ த்திரம்.
❖ Each person is responsible for the proper purpose.
❖ 1 Peter 3:21:21 There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the
removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward
God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
❖ 21 அதற்கு ஒப்பைனயான ஞானஸ்நானமானது, மாம்ச அழுக்கை
நீக்குதலாயிராமல், ேதவைனப்பற்றும் நல்மனச்சாட்சியின்
உடன்படிக்கை யாயிருந்து, இப்பொழுது நம்மை யும் இேயசுகிறிஸ்துவினுைடய உயிர்த்தெ ழுதலினால் இரட்சிக்கிறது.
❖ Each person is responsible for the proper influence.
❖ 2 Corinthians 5:10:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to
what he has done, whether good or bad.
❖ 10. ஏெனன்றா ல், சரீரத்தில் அவனவன் ெசய்த நன்மை க்காவது தீைமக்காவது தக்க பலைன அைடயும்படிக்கு, நாெமல்லாரும்
கிறிஸ்துவின் நியாயாசனத்திற்கு முன்பா க ெவளிப்படேவண்டும்.
❖ Each person is responsible to exhort
and encourage other Christians.
❖ 1 Corinthians 12:12,25-26:12 For as the
body is one and has many members, but
all the members of that one body, being
many, are one body, so also is
Christ.25 that there should be no
[a]schism in the body, but that the
members should have the same care for
one another. 26 And if one member
suffers, all the members suffer with it; or
if one member is honored, all the
members rejoice with it.
❖ 12. எப்படிெயனில், சரீரம் ஒன்று, அதற்கு
அவயவங்கள் அேநகம்; ஒேர சரீரத்தின்
அவயவங்கெளல்லாம் அேநகமாயிருந்தும்,
சரீரம் ஒன்றா கேவயிருக்கிறது;
அந்தப்பிரகாரமாகக் கிறிஸ்துவும்
இருக்கிறார்.25. சரீரத்திேல
பிரிவிைனயுண்டாயிராமல், அவயவங்கள்
ஒன்றை க்குறித்து ஒன்று
கவைலயாயிருக்கும்படிக்கு, ேதவன்
கனத்தில் குைறவுள்ளதற்கு அதிக கனத்தைக்
கொடுத்து, இப்படிச் சரீரத்தை
அைமத்திருக்கிறார்.26. ஆதலால் ஒரு
அவயவம் பாடுபட்டால் எல்லா அவயவங்களும்
கூடப் பாடுபடும்; ஒரு அவயவம்
மகிைமப்பட்டால் எல்லா அவயவங்களும்
கூடச் சந்தோ ஷப்படும்.
❖ Each person is responsible to worship
the Lord.
❖ 1 Corinthians 10:16-17:16 The cup of
blessing which we bless, is it not the
[a]communion of the blood of Christ?
The bread which we break, is it not the
communion of the body of Christ? 17 For
we, though many, are one bread and one
body; for we all partake of that one
bread.
❖ 16. நாம் ஆசீர்வதிக்கிற ஆசீர்வா தத்தின்
பாத்திரம் கிறிஸ்துவினுைடய இரத்தத்தின்
ஐக்கியமாயிருக்கிறதல்லவா? நாம் பிட்கிற
அப்பம் கிறிஸ்துவினுைடய சரீரத்தின்
ஐக்கியமாயிருக்கிறதல்லவா?17. அந்த ஒேர
அப்பத்தில் நாெமல்லாரும்
பங்குெபறுகிறபடியால், அேநகரான நாம்
ஒேர அப்பமும் ஒேர சரீரமுமாயிருக்கிறோம்.
❖ Acts.2:41-42:41 Then those who
[c]gladly received his word were
baptized; and that day about three
thousand souls were added to them.
42 And they continued steadfastly in the
apostles’ [d]doctrine and fellowship, in
the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
❖ 41. அவனுைடய வார்த்தை ையச்
சந்தோ ஷமாய் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டவர்கள்
ஞானஸ்நானம் ெபற்றார்கள்.
அன்றை யத்தினம் ஏறக்குைறய
மூவாயிரம்பே ர்
ேசர்த்து க்கொள்ளப்பட்டார்கள்.42. அவர்கள்
அப்போஸ்தலருைடய உபேதசத்திலும்,
அந்நியோந்நியத்திலும், அப்பம்
பிட்குதலிலும், ெஜபம்பண்ணுதலிலும்
உறுதியாய்த் தரித்திருந்தார்கள்.
❖ Each person is responsible to put God
first in their lives.
❖ 1 Corinthians 15:58:58 Therefore, my
beloved brethren, be steadfast,
immovable, always abounding in the
work of the Lord, knowing that your labor
is not in vain in the Lord.
❖ 58. ஆைகயால், எனக்குப் பிரியமான
சகோ தரேர, கர்த்த ருக்குள் நீங்கள் படுகிற
பிரயாசம் விருதாவாயிராெதன்று அறிந்து,
நீங்கள் உறுதிப்பட்டவர்களாயும்,
அைசயாதவர்களாயும், கர்த்த ருைடய
கிரிையயிேல எப்பொழுதும்
ெபருகுகிறவர்களாயும் இருப்பீர்களாக.
❖ There is no historical evidence that there
was an infant baptism and also it was
introduced in the 5th century AD when
Roman Empire Constantine wanted to do
it for his child who was on death bed to
avoid going to hell.
❖ So adult baptism is the only baptism and
there is no infant baptism and if someone
takes infant baptism, he/she should take
the adult baptism again.
Infant Baptism
Argument: There is only one baptism and
the infants can be baptized along with the
adult baptism. Is the adult believer’s
baptism only baptism in the Christian faith?
❖ Children also are sinful
❖ Psalm 51:5:Behold, I was brought forth
in iniquity, And in sin my mother
conceived me.
❖ 5. இதோ, நான் துர்க்கு ணத்தில்
உருவாேனன்; என் தாய் என்னை ப் பாவத்தில்
கர்ப்ப ந்தரித்தாள்.
❖ Children can believe.
❖ Mark.10:14:14 But when Jesus saw it,
He was greatly displeased and said to
them, “Let the little children come to Me,
and do not forbid them; for of such is the
kingdom of God
❖ 14. இேயசு அைதக் கண்டு,
விசனமைடந்து: சிறு பிள்ளை கள்
என்னிடத்தில் வருகிறதற்கு
இடங்கொ டுங்கள்; அவர்கைளத்
தைடபண்ணா திருங்கள்; ேதவனுைடய
ராஜ்யம் அப்படிப்பட்டவர்களுைடயது.
❖ Baptism is a sign of the saving act of
God, not to be saved.
❖ Titus 3:5-6: 5 not by works of
righteousness which we have done, but
according to His mercy He saved us,
through the washing of regeneration and
renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He
poured out on us abundantly through
Jesus Christ our Savior,
❖ 5. நாம் ெசய்த நீதியின்
கிரிையகளினிமித்தம் அவர் நம்மை
இரட்சியாமல், தமது இரக்கத்தின்படிேய,
மறுெஜன்ம முழுக்கினாலும், பரிசுத்த
ஆவியினுைடய புதிதாக்குதலினாலும் நம்மை
இரட்சித்தார்.6. தமது கிருைபயினாேல நாம்
நீதிமான்களாக்கப்பட்டு, நித்திய
ஜீவனுண்டாகும் என்கிற நம்பிக்கை யின்படி
சுதந்தரராகத்தக்கதாக,
❖ Family baptisms are mentioned in the
Bible.
❖ Acts..16:15,33:15 And when she and
her household were baptized, she
begged us, saying, “If you have judged
me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my
house and stay.” So she persuaded
us.33 And he took them the same hour
of the night and washed their stripes.
And immediately he and all his family
were baptized.
❖ 15. அவளும் அவள் வீட்டாரும்
ஞானஸ்நானம் ெபற்றபின்பு, அவள் எங்கைள
நோ க்கி: நீங்கள் என்னை க் கர்த்த ரிடத்தில்
விசுவாசமுள்ளவெளன்று எண்ணினால், என்
வீட்டிேல வந்து தங்கியிருங்கள் என்று
எங்கைள வருந்திக் ேகட்டுக்கொண்டாள்.
33. ேமலும் இராத்திரியில்
அந்நே ரத்திேலதாேன அவன் அவர்கைள
அைழத்துக்கொண்டுபோய், அவர்களுைடய
காயங்கைளக் கழுவினான். அவனும்
அவனுைடயவர்கள் அைனவரும் உடேன
ஞானஸ்நானம் ெபற்றார்கள்.
❖ 1 Cor.1:16:16 Yes, I also baptized the
household of Stephanas. Besides, I do
not know whether I baptized any other.
❖ 16. ஸ்தே வானுைடய வீட்டாருக்கும் நான்
ஞானஸ்நானங் கொடுத்ததுண்டு.
இதுவுமல்லாமல் இன்னும் யாருக்காவது நான்
ஞானஸ்நானங் கொடுத்தேனோ இல்லையோ
அறிேயன்.
❖ Baptism replaced circumcision.
(Covenantal Grace)
❖ Col.2:11-12:11 In Him you were also
circumcised with the circumcision made
without hands, by putting off the body
[a]of the sins of the flesh, by the
circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with
Him in baptism, in which you also were
raised with Him through faith in the
working of God, who raised Him from
the dead.
❖ 11. அல்லாமலும், நீங்கள்
கிறிஸ்துைவப்பற்றும்
விருத்தேசதனத்தினாேல மாம்சத்துக்குரிய
பாவசரீரத்தைக் கைளந்துவிட்டதினால்,
ைகயால் ெசய்யப்படாத விருத்தேசதனத்தை
அவருக்குள் ெபற்றீர்கள்.12.
ஞானஸ்நானத்திேல அவரோேடகூட
அடக்கம்பண்ணப்பட்டவர்களாகவும், அதிேல
அவைர மரித்தோரிலிருந்தெழுப்பின
ேதவனுைடய ெசயலின்மேலுள்ள
விசுவாசத்தினாேல அவரோேடகூட
எழுந்தவர்களாகவும் இருக்கிறீர்கள்.
❖ Children are a part of all people.
❖ Matt.28:19:19 Go [c]therefore and
make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
❖ 19. ஆைகயால், நீங்கள் புறப்பட்டுப்போய்,
சகல ஜாதிகைளயும் சீஷராக்கி, பிதா குமாரன்
பரிசுத்த ஆவியின் நாமத்திேல அவர்களுக்கு
ஞானஸ்நானங்கொ டுத்து,
❖ Church history tells us this truth.
❖ Iranaeus:"For He (the Lord came to
save all of them through himself; all of
them, I say, who through him are born
again in God, the infants, and the small
children, and the boys, and the mature,
and the older people."
❖ Origen:"The church received from the
apostles the tradition to give even little
children to baptism."
- Hippolytus: “First you should baptize
the little ones. All who can speak for
themselves, should speak. But for those
who cannot speak, their parents should
speak, or another who belongs to their
family. Then baptize the grown men, lastly
the women”
❖ Christening and infant baptism
❖ A christening service is nearly identical
to a baptism service, but it may include a
part in the service where a Christian
name is given to the child. However, all
christenings include the vital act of
baptism with water.
❖ Around 890 AD, Christening first
emerged in the church. It was done with
the baptism of the infant but later it
replaced the meaning of baptism. Infant
baptism is not Christening.
❖ When in the western world, all citizens
are Christians by birth, Christening
becomes infant baptism, and truths of
the baptism were missed out. So, there
was a movement raised in the 16th
Century to bring back adult baptism into
the church. This movement is called into
different forms in different times as
Anabaptists, puritans, and Pentecostals.
❖ So we can baptize infants with biblical
truths but not connected with
Christening but, however, the infants
have to own their faith truths and
sacraments in the times of confirmation
(Reaffirmation of Baptism)
Confirmation/Reaffirmation of
Baptism
- Re-Affirmation of Baptism
- Re-affirmation of baptism is not a
second baptism.
- Jesus was circumcised on the eighth
day of his birth and then was baptized by
John the Baptism to fulfill righteousness.
- When a person is baptized as a baby,
people may argue that he/she needs to be
baptized again. According to the Bible,
there will be one baptism. When a person
is baptized as a child, they can reaffirm
their baptism ( Another word for
confirmation) by going into the water and
coming back again in front of the believers
to reaffirm their baptism. It is symbolic and
reaffirms their baptism which they had
received as a child.
- So if anyone wants to have a
reaffirmation of baptism, they can do it to
re-affirm their baptism. So the pastor
cannot baptize the person again but allow
the person to re-affirm their baptism on
their own.
- Pastor declares this: This person
received the baptism in Christ when he/
she was a child but now he/she reaffirmed
his/her baptism by being immersed into
the water in the name of Christ as a
testimony to us)
- 3. Though a child is already a child of
God, we confirm the child when it is grown
up to make their personal commitment to
Jesus. In the same way, reaffirmation of
baptism is to be observed.

❖ Water is essential to symbolize baptism.
❖ Sprinkling and Pouring

❖ 21. அதற்கு ஒப்பைனயான ஞானஸ்நானமானது, மாம்ச அழுக்கை
நீக்குதலாயிராமல், ேதவைனப்பற்றும் நல்மனச்சாட்சியின்
உடன்படிக்கை யாயிருந்து, இப்பொழுது நம்மை யும் இயசுகிறிஸ்துவினுைடய உயிர்த்தெ ழுதலினால் இரட்சிக்கிறது.
❖ "This water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also – not the removal of
dirt from the body, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you
by the resurrection of Jesus Christ
❖ So people use sprinkling and pouring water during the baptism
❖ Immersion
❖ Romans 6:4:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life
❖ 4. ேமலும் பிதாவின் மகிைமயினாேல கிறிஸ்து மரித்தோரிலிருந்து
எழுப்பப்பட்டதுபோல, நாமும் புதிதான ஜீவனுள்ளவர்களாய்
நடந்துகொள்ளும்படிக்கு, அவருைடய மரணத்திற்குள்ளா க்கும்
ஞானஸ்நானத்தினாேல கிறிஸ்துவுடேனகூட அடக்கம்பண்ணப்பட்டோம்.
