Psalm 119:97-104 (Part 13)
Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj
Introduction
We express our love for God and His Word in various ways. The psalmist beautifully outlines his expressions of love towards the Word of God.
1. The Love of God’s Word Expressed Through Meditation (Psalm 119:97).
- The psalmist’s affection for the Word of God is deeply passionate, reflecting a profound love relationship. He regards God's Word as more valuable than anything else. His way of expressing this love involves constant reading, understanding, and meditation throughout the day, treating it as food, medicine, light, and comfort.
- This relationship is nurtured through dedicating time, attention, appreciation, praise, listening, honoring, obeying, trusting, and depending on God’s Word consistently and diligently.
2.The Love of God’s Word Expressed Through Learning (Psalm 119:98-100).
- The psalmist shows his love for God’s Word by actively learning from it. He gains wisdom that surpasses that of his enemies, teachers, and the ancients.
- His meditation on God’s Word enhances his understanding and wisdom, demonstrating that true learning comes from deep engagement with the sacred text.
3. The Love of God’s Word Expressed Through Restraint from Evil (Psalm 119:101-102).
- The psalmist recognizes that self-restraint enables him to grasp the essence of God’s Word better. By staying away from evil ways, he allows the Word to enlighten him. He understands that it is through God’s revelation that he can discern and avoid wickedness.
4. The Love of God’s Word Expressed Through Appreciating it as Sweet. Psalm 119:103-104
- The psalmist delights in God’s Word, finding it sweeter than honey. Through study and meditation, he experiences satisfaction and joy, especially amidst the trials of faith. The Word of God brings joy and sweetness to his life, making it a source of comfort.
Conclusion
The psalmist illustrates four distinct ways to show love for God’s Word: through meditation, learning, restraining from evil, and cherishing its sweetness. How do you express your love for God’s Word?
