Ayin ע: Seeking from God’s Word.
Psalm 119:121-128 (Part 16)
Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj
Introduction
Psalm 119:121-128 is a heartfelt prayer from the psalmist, expressing dependence on God through poetry and song. This passage serves as a model for how we can bring our prayers before the Lord, especially when seeking help and guidance from His word.
1. Seeking Protection from the Proud (Psalm 119:121-122).
The psalmist acknowledges his own imperfection, yet he expresses confidence in the general righteousness of his life—a righteousness rooted in God, not self. This distinction sets him apart from his oppressors, who disregard God’s ways. His integrity is an outflow of God’s goodness, so he asks the Lord for protection from the proud. Notably, Psalm 119:122 is the only verse in this psalm that does not explicitly mention God’s word, emphasizing the personal nature of his plea.
2. Seeking Salvation and Righteousness in God’s Word (Psalm 119:123-125).
Recognizing that his righteousness comes from God, the psalmist looks to God’s word as the source of salvation and mercy. He diligently seeks understanding—not to know hidden secrets, but to comprehend God’s testimonies more deeply. Three times in four verses, he humbly identifies himself as God’s servant, highlighting his dependence and desire for divine instruction.
3. Seeking God’s Action for His Word (Psalm 119:126).
As a faithful follower, the psalmist boldly calls on God to act because many have disregarded His word. He prays with urgency, asking the Lord to intervene and uphold His promises in the sight of those who ignore His commands. This bold plea reflects a deep trust in God’s justice.
4. Seeking a Greater Appreciation for God’s Word (Psalm 119:127-128).
While others may treat God’s word as insignificant, the psalmist treasures it above gold and pure gold. He places his full confidence in God’s commands and naturally rejects every false way, affirming that God’s word is always true and supremely valuable.
Conclusion
The psalmist’s prayer in this passage highlights a desire for protection, salvation, righteous living, and a greater love for God’s word. He ends with deep appreciation for Scripture, recognizing its power to set believers apart from those who reject it. As you read God’s word, what do you seek from Him?
