Tsadde צ: The Righteousness of God’s Word
Psalm 119:137-144 (Part 18)
Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj
Introduction
The Hebrew letter Tsadde sounds like the word for righteousness, setting the tone for this section of Psalm 119. The focus is on the righteousness of God, as revealed through His word and character.
1. The Righteousness of God and His Word (Psalm 119:137-138).
- ’Gods righteous character is displayed in His judgments and His word. The testimonies of God are not only righteous but also very faithful—full of truth and reliability. As His word reflects Him, God is both faithful and truthful. The Bible reflects the very character of God, revealing what righteousness truly is.
2. A Passionate Love for God’s Word (Psalm 119:139-140).
- Despite enemies who reject God’s word, the psalmist’s zeal grows stronger. This zeal is not passive; it is energetic, leading to active devotion. The psalmist appreciates the purity of God’s word—refined and trustworthy, like gold purified in a furnace. Because of this purity, he loves God’s word deeply.
3. Holding Fast to the True Word of God (Psalm 119:141-142).
- The psalmist feels insignificant and despised by others, yet finds comfort and strength in God’s word. Even in weakness and vulnerability, he clings to the enduring, unchanging righteousness revealed in Scripture. God’s word remains truth and righteousness forever, regardless of human opinion.
4. God’s Word Provides Life in Times of Trouble (Psalm 119:143-144).
- Life is not free from trouble or anguish; the psalmist admits to being overtaken by hardship. Yet God’s commandments are his delight, and understanding them brings joy and endurance. The eternal and trustworthy nature of God’s word helps him rise above life’s challenges.
Conclusion
God’s word is eternal, righteous, and true. When we find delight in Scripture—seeing it as a revelation of God’s character—it gives us strength and power in times of trouble. When others reject or disregard God’s word, do we respond with zeal, recognizing it as the trustworthy truth that sustains our lives? Are you zealous for God’s word?
