Tau ת: Loving God’s Word and Deliverance of God.
Psalm 119:169-176 (Part 22)
Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj
Introduction
The psalmist ends this psalm with the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, linking his love for God’s word with God’s redemptive action. Loving God’s word leads us to long for God’s redemption.
1. Understanding According to God’s Word (Psalm 119:169-170).
The psalmist pleads with the Lord to give him understanding according to God’s word, desiring his thoughts to be transformed. As he prays for understanding, he also asks for deliverance as promised in God’s word. The salvation he seeks is a righteous and wise deliverance. He wants the Lord to deliver him from all unrighteousness by giving him insight from God’s word.
2. Speaking of God’s Word (Psalm 119:171-172).
The psalmist mentions his lips and tongue, expressing his desire to praise God and speak of God’s word both personally and publicly. In both responses, he recognizes his need for God’s instruction. Thus, he asks God to teach him, acknowledging that God’s commandments are righteous.
3. Longing for Redemption from God’s Word (Psalm 119:173-174).
The psalmist boldly asks God for help, explaining that he has chosen to love God and His word. Loving God and seeking His salvation go hand in hand. He delights in God’s word and longs for God’s salvation.
4. Depending on God’s Word (Psalm 119:175-176).
Through a consistent and healthy relationship with God, the psalmist admits his need for life and guidance from God and His word. His dependence on God’s word highlights glorifying God as his greatest need. Confessing his imperfection and helplessness, he asks God to seek him, reaffirming his commitment to God’s commandments as God’s servant.
Conclusion
When we love God, we expect Him to fulfill all His promises in our lives—and He will. However, before expecting God’s actions, we must love His word. Through God’s word, He gives us understanding and then deliverance. Many seek God’s deliverance in their crises but do not love His word. Do you love God’s word before seeking His deliverance? If so, you are on the right path.
