Protection of God
Psalm 125
Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj.
Introduction
Psalm 125 is one of the 15 Songs of Ascents, sung by pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem for Israel’s major annual feasts. Even today, people walking along Jerusalem’s city walls chant this psalm, celebrating God’s protection.
God’s People Are Like Mount Zion
1. Because They trust God (Psalm 125:2).
David opens by declaring that those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion—unshakable and enduring. Trusting God involves a personal relationship marked by reverence, love, and knowledge of Him. The security of believers does not come from physical mountains or cities, but from the Creator Himself. Unlike sand (Matthew 7:26), the restless sea (Isaiah 57:20), or the unpredictable wind (Ephesians 4:14), those who trust God are firm and confident.
2. Because They Are Protected by God (Psalm 125:2).
Jerusalem is surrounded by higher mountains—Mount of Olives, Mount Scopus, and others—which provide natural and strategic security. In the same way, God surrounds and protects those who trust Him, offering divine security that surpasses physical defenses.
3. Because They Are Righteous in Their Relationships (Psalm 125:3).
God promises protection to those who maintain a right relationship with Him. Righteousness among God’s people prevents the rule and oppression of wickedness. The psalm assures that evil will not have permanent dominion over the righteous.
4. Because They Have Righteousness in Their Hearts (Psalm 125:4-5).
A covenant relationship with God is rooted in obedience to His commandments, stemming from a righteous heart. Those who walk in God’s ways receive His blessings; disobedience leads to a lack of His goodness. The psalmist prays for blessings on the obedient and concludes with a call for peace upon Israel, affirming faithfulness to the covenant.
Conclusion
The psalmist shares the vibrant experience of trusting God: His protection is promised to those who rely on His power, believe His promises, and respond with faithful obedience. Would you like to experience God’s protection like Mount Zion? Trust, rely on, and obey God’s promises, power, and commandments.
