Amazing God’s Work
Psalm 126
Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj
Introduction
Psalm 126, the seventh of the Songs of Ascents, is one of fifteen pilgrimage psalms sung by Israelites journeying to Jerusalem. Composed in the aftermath of Israel’s exile, this psalm praises God’s remarkable restoration of His people and serves as both a celebration of past deliverance and a prayer for ongoing renewal.
A. Joy of restoration at the return from exile (Psalm 126:1-3).
- Joy at the time of God’s restoration (Psalm 126:1).
- When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, it was as if the people were dreaming. This restoration likely refers to two key moments in Israel’s history: the return from Babylonian exile and David’s return after Absalom’s rebellion.
- Ways of Joy at the time of God’s restoration (Psalm 126:2-3).
- The overwhelming joy at God’s intervention filled the people with laughter and songs of praise. Their testimony became a declaration of God’s greatness, inspiring not only themselves but also those around them to recognize God’s amazing work.
B. Prayer for continued restoration and cycle of joy (Psalm 126:4-6).
- Prayer for continued deliverance (Psalm 126:4).
- Recognizing that restoration is both a moment and a process, the psalmist prays for further deliverance—just as the dry southern streams of Israel are filled by distant rains.
- Prayer for cycle of joy (Psalm 126:5-6).
- The joy of restoration is not just a memory but a foundation for hope in future blessings. The psalm uses two images: sudden, miraculous renewal and gradual, hard-won fruitfulness. The first is a gift from above; the second, a result of perseverance through tears and labor. Both are essential aspects of spiritual renewal. Tears sown in faith will, in time, yield a harvest of rejoicing.
Conclusion
’Gods restoration is often a surprising and joyful gift, sometimes arriving suddenly, like a dream fulfilled. Yet, we are called to continually seek God’s transforming work in our lives through prayer and faithfulness. The experience of being born again is a profound act of God’s restoration, but our journey with Him involves ongoing transformation. Consider: When have you felt the joy of God’s saving work? Are you praying for continued renewal and restoration in your daily life?
