Key to Success Personal and Parenting Life
Psalm 127
Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj.
Introduction
Psalm 127, composed by King Solomon, is a Song of Ascents that highlights the significance of God’s blessing on the family. This psalm centers on the truth that true prosperity and security in life come from God alone, not from human effort.
1. God’s Blessing Upon Our Daily Life (Psalm 127:1-2).
- Solomon teaches that unless God is the builder, those who build labor in vain. In this context, “building” refers not just to physical structures but especially to the family. No one can establish a successful family without God’s help. Likewise, protecting a city is futile unless God is its ultimate protector. As a king, Solomon understood the importance of security, but he affirmed that all human efforts are fruitless apart from God’s grace and blessing.
- Solomon also reminds us that relying solely on our own strength and hard work is vanity. We may toil long hours seeking prosperity, daily provision, and rest, yet without God, these efforts may only lead to anxiety and sleeplessness. It is God who grants true prosperity, joy, and peaceful rest.
2. God’s Blessings Upon Our Family (Psalm 127:3-5).
- Children are described as a heritage from the Lord and a reward from Him. They are not merely the result of biological processes, but a precious blessing entrusted by God. The family is the foundation of a healthy community, and children deserve our sincere care and attention.
- Solomon likens children to arrows in a warrior's hand, emphasizing the importance of shaping, guiding, and directing them with skill and strength. Parents are called to provide direction and nurture, equipping their children to become a source of strength and accomplishment. A man whose quiver is full of children is truly blessed. Through their children, parents can influence business and justice in their community. The ancient city was a center for both, and well-equipped children could bring honor and prominence to their families. Yet, Solomon affirms that without God, parents cannot raise children who will positively influence their world.
Conclusion
We often strive to make our lives, families, and communities prosperous and secure. However, without God, all these efforts are ultimately in vain. One of the greatest joys in life is to have children, recognizing them as God’s blessing. Parenting and all our endeavors—work, family, business, and ministry—require God’s guidance and grace. Do you invite God into every aspect of your life? If so, you are truly a good steward of His blessings.
