A Universal Call to Praise the Lord

Psalm 148

Introduction

Psalm 148 is a unique psalm in the Book of Psalms.It contains no reference to: God's mercy, God's compassion. Forgiveness, and Human sin. It is entirely a hymn of praise. The psalm issues a universal call for all creation—both in heaven and on earth—to praise the Lord.

I. Praising God from the Heavens (Psalm 148:1–6).

• Calling upon Heaven to Praise the Lord (Psalm 148:1–4).

The psalm begins with the joyful exclamation, "Hallelujah!" ("Praise the Lord!”). The psalmist calls upon the heavens to praise the Lord. God is worthy of praise because He is: the God of Israel, and the Sovereign Lord over all creation.The invitation to praise includes:the angels, all the heavenly hosts, the sun, the moon, the stars, the highest heavens, and the waters above the heavens. Every part of the heavenly realm is called to honor and glorify its Creator.

• Reasons for Calling Heaven to Praise the Lord (Psalm 148:5–6).


• God is the Creator: All heavenly beings and bodies were created by His command. He spoke, and they came into existence.


• God is the Sustainer: He established them forever. They continue to exist according to His decree. He is their Creator, Sustainer, Ruler, and Lord. Therefore, they have every reason to praise Him.

II. Praising God from the Earth (Psalm 148:7–14).

• Calling upon Earth to Praise the Lord (Psalm 148:7–12).


• All creation on earth is invited to praise GodL God is the Creator of all humanity. People should worship the Creator rather than the creation.


• The sea is called to praise God: Great sea creatures and all the depths of the ocean.


• The forces of nature are called to praise God: Lightning (fire), Hail, Snow, Clouds, and Stormy winds that obey His word.


• The land is called to praise God: Mountains, Hills, Fruit trees,Cedars,Wild animals, Livestock, Creeping creatures, and  Flying birds.


• All humanity is called to praise God: Kings, Princes,Rulers and judges,  Young men, Young women, Old people, and  Children.


• Why should humanity praise God? He is the Creator.He is the Sustainer of all people.


•  Reasons for Calling Earth to Praise the Lord (Psalm 148:13–14).


• God alone is worthy of worship:His name is exalted above every other name. He alone deserves honor and praise.


• God's glory is supreme:His glory is above the earth and the heavens.He is infinitely greater than His creation.


• God strengthens His people: He has exalted the "horn" of His people. The horn symbolizes: Strength, Honor, and Victory. God demonstrated His faithfulness throughout Israel's history by rescuing and establishing His people.


• God dwells with His people:He has drawn near to those who belong to Him.His presence is the greatest blessing His people can experience.Therefore, all creation should praise Him.And so, the psalm concludes with the joyful cry:"Hallelujah!" ("Praise the Lord!").

Conclusion

God is the Creator of heaven and earth. He is the Maker, Sustainer, and Sovereign Ruler of everything. Psalm 148 calls every part of creation to praise Him.The psalm also explains why God alone deserves worship:He created all things.He sustains all things.His glory surpasses all creation.He strengthens and remains near to His people. The psalm ends with a personal challenge:If all creation praises the Lord, are you praising God with your life?
